Cyberlink/ATI H.264 codec - my experience

Postby phoebus » Thu Aug 24, 2006 4:29 am

Hi, I've somehow - at least I think - managed to activate the cyberlink ati h.264 codec (hardware acceleration with X1300 cards and higher) with dvbdream 1.1h

Here's my setup:

Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz HT, socket 478, 2 GB RAM, Abit IC7 mb
Sapphire X1600 AGP 512 mb graphics card
Technisat SkyStar 2 PCI with the latest driver
WXP Pro SP2
Media Player 10
Power DVD 7 and the latest Cyberlink H.264 ATI Codec
latest wdm/catalyst/avivo from ati.com

I've done the following:

Added/uncommented the following into guids.ini

H264CODEC4=CyberLink H.264 (ATI), {A56EDF13-2F7E-451E-905B-FF9B4859D165}
H264CODEC4_DESC=Quirky behaviour...

(Btw, the GUID for the latest Mainconcept h.264 is this

H264CODEC3=Moonlight H.264 , {6A270473-9994-4AEB-801F-BB2C4E56EE38}
H264CODEC3_DESC=More or less working but slow
)

Followed the instructions available into support.ati.com - advanced search - search by ID - ID 737-19544:

737-19544: How to enable DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA) in Windows Media Player 10

The following steps will help you enable DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA) within Windows Media Player 10

1a. Install Catalyst 5.6 or higher. Drivers before Catalyst 5.5 to not support DXVA acceleration
b. Reboot

2a. Install Windows DRM update

b. Reboot

Note: Please refer to this article for more information: Update for Windows Media Digital Rights Management-enabled players

3. Install the following Windows Media Player Hotfix

Note: Please refer to this article for more information on the Hotfix: Update to enable DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA) of Windows Media Video content in Windows Media Player 10

4. Go into Catalyst Control Center. Switch to Advanced view

5. Go to the Video, All Settings

6. Scroll to the bottom of the Catalyst Control Page to find the Windows Media Setting option and ensure Windows Media Video Acceleration is checked on.

7. Start Windows Media Player 10, go into Tools, Options (if the menu bar is not available, double the click title bar to display)

8. Open the Performance tab and click Advanced under Video Acceleration

After the reboot, I've set the filter merits (with GSpot) to 0x00000020 (DO NOT USE) to all the H.264 filter except Cyberlink/ATI/H.265 AND their respective MPEG-4 Splitters: I've Mainconcept, CoreAVC and Cyberlink/PDVD/ codec.

After this, if I select Cyberlink ATI as the H.264 codec into dvbdream 1.1h I get a 'purpled out' ATI H.264 line in the combobox, signaling an error: but in the Active Directshow filters I get an 'ATI' video c odec, the audio codec, and the dvbdream ts filter.

The only h.264 channel I can get i luxe.tv hd on 13E currently. The image is ok for 20-30 seconds, then there are often some strange banding artifacts for a few seconds, then everything gets back ok. When it is ok, the frame rate is really smooth even on my lowly (for HDTV) system, though, much better than the software only h.264 codec. I don't know if this is because ATI supports HDTV resolutions up to 720p on the X1600 while LUXE.TV is 1920x1080 (1080i should be supported on the X1800 and higher, but I've got no hardware to try)
