Authoring: illegal video file w/DD1.3a; ok w/DD8.7

When I try to author a recorded show from DD 1.3a using TMPGenc author and patching header w/DVDpatcher, I get a message saying that the video is an illegal video file and must be either an MPEG-1 or 2 file. I am able to author the same video using DD8.7. Both are set to record mpeg and not TS. Is there some special setting in DD1.3a I must use to author a recorded show?
