FFDSHOW is great. Very useful.
However, it should be noted that it contains many codecs and you may not want to use them all.
DV-AVI for example, FFDSHOW handles DV files by default but I've found its performance very poor. Microsoft native DV codec works much better.
You can deselect the file types FFDSHOW handles. It would be wise to examine the settings when you install it and go through the options afterward. If you find another application isn't working properly after installing FFDSHOW you can probably adjust the settings and it will work again while leaving FFDSHOW installed to use.
Caution with FFDSHOW
