Timeshift and keyboard shortcuts that don't work?

Is DD dependent on the alignment of the planets or the tides to function properly?
Timeshifting is iffy at best: after watching TV for more than an hour it seems to stop working altogether, if I try to rewind or fast-forward it umps around at random.
Same thing for keyboard shortcuts: help file says to use SHIFT-LEFT or RIGHT to go back or forward in timeshift, but they stop WORKINg after a short while (no reason, just because!!). i saw in a post here to use CTL-SHIFT-LEFT and RIGHT instead. but that jumps too far back or ahead. And SPACE, which is supposed to start and stop timeshifting, does absolutely nothing at all.
I'd like to keep using DD, but i want to know if this is something I need to work out on my end. Frankly, if this is a problem with DD I'm not going to spend another minute wasting time with buggy software (MT is worst, it actually CHARGES for its bugs!).
