strange problem: SD playback stutters, but HD ok?

I am having a strange playback issue.
My DD1.4i cannot play SD MPEG2 channels smoothly. Frame drops a lot.

The strange thing is, it plays HD MPEG2 channels pretty well. Zero or very few frame drops depending on channel. Very watchable.

I have tried different MPEG2 codecs: PowerDVD, PureVideo, and ffdshow. Also tried different audio codec combinations: Purevideo, ffdshow, microsoft. All behave the same with VMR9.
If I set render mode to VMR, then SD and HD are both smooth. But the interlace artifact is very bad. So picture quality still not satisfatory.

How can SD playback be so bad while HD is mostly ok? They are all MPEG2 channels...

BTW, MPEG4 channels play even better on my system with CoreAVC 1.6.5. Zero or very few frame drops depending on channel.

Has anyone experienced this before? How do I fix SD playback with VMR9?

Change the codecs & renderes. Use intervideo video and audio codecs.
Watch your statistics (the collapsable panel at the bottom , above the playback controls) to see if there are packet losses on SD channels.

Packet loss is 0. The fact that it plays fine with VMR (not VMR9) indicates that the incoming stream should be ok.

If I record the SD program, and play it back with ZoomPlayer (PowerDVD mpeg2 codec and Microsoft audio codec), then it plays fine. It only stutters in DD.

I don't have intervideo codecs. I'll try to find it to try it out as you suggested.

Just finished installing Intervideo codec and tried with DD on mpeg2 programs. Still the same. Major frame skipping with SD, a little with HD.

Anything else I could try?

PS: it only happens with DD. I tried mytheatre and it plays SD channels fine with any mpeg2 codecs. But I would much rather to get DD working properly. Thanks!
