Need for a Decent Tutorial for Themes...

Hi,
Although the skins are many, nothing particularly matches my needs. So I'd like to create one. Although it seemed simple enough yet I've encountered "transparent bitmap" issue where I know nothing about...
Can someone (especially creator(s), admin(s) etc...) post a decent tutorial about "How to create your own Theme" with step-by-step instructions (simplified) and examples with use of the 'freeware' tools? If not for all, at least for creation of these nasty transparent bitmaps (where a bitmap can't actually be transparent but mimic), or better how about supporting either gif or png instead of (maybe in addition to) bmp for easing the overall creation...
