capture directly to xvid?

Is there any possibility to capture stream directly to avi (dvix/xvid whatever)? What it needs to accomplish this? An external plugin maybe? Anybody has succeeded ever on that?
I suppose using ffdshow this might be possible.
Or set up ffmpeg to capture from the stream or as mpeg file is saved and convert to xvid.
Interesting idea.
