Seeing recording quality on the fly

Postby J_N » Wed Jul 19, 2006 6:32 am

When I record some scrambled (FTA needs less cpu I think) channel, I would like to know how much my other work on PC affects the quality of my recording. How many errors are there (if any). I mean some analogy to dropped frames when capturing live analog picture, for example in VirtualDub. I would like to see on the fly the approximate count of errors before I check the complete file with PVAStrumento, VideoReDo or similar utility. It would help me to better organize my work (this I can do without worrying, this I don't - recording will surely have many errors). Could it be done?

P.S.: I don't see much into what is 'inside' but my idea of originating errors when making recorded mpeg2 is that player doesn't have enough cpu time to do all the work (TS parsing, CSA algorithm,..), so it starts to skip received data and thus the mpeg2 file has errors. Am I right ? If so, could the skip moment be detected ?

And by the way - what's the difference between SS1 HW Mode and SS2 renderless mode recording ?

You can use Render-less mode and watch CPU usage in status bar.

It was not meant as a question if it's now possible. I know it's not. Seeing cpu usage doesn't tell me much, I can't do any correct conclusion from this.
The whole idea was meant for author of DvbDream, who knows best what's inside player and if that feature can be newly implemented. A few words from him would be welcomed.

J_N - You're right, so I support it too.

Maybe this information could be automatically shown (also) in Renderless mode, as OSD, as option in "normal" mode.

hi,

it might be possible to display number of 'dropped frames' (might be implemented in next versions)
DVB Dream - because I have to dream about having time to code it
